The Witch of Edmonton

5- 20 March 2022

Digital Theatre | Live online

“If every poor old Woman be trod on thus, reviled, kicked, beaten, as I am daily, she to be revenged had need turn Witch.”

Performed live online, we presented a new Digital Theatre adaptation of the ‘crimes’ and punishment of Edmonton’s witch, based on a classic of early modern drama. Interwoven with records of other historical witch trials, The Witch of Edmonton revealed the dangers of being an outsider in a place where to be different is to be condemned. Taking the 1940s as its setting, the production examined the claustrophobia and double standards of a small community under threat. Screening live in to our bespoke platform Auditorium, the show mixed video feeds from actors based at home and in our green screen studio space.

You can read the show’s programme here, and learn some little-known witch facts we gathered here. Laura the show’s Director, who also wrote the adaptation, also wrote a very illuminating Director’s note which is on our blog. Or check out this blog by one of the show’s cast.

We held a post show discussion which you can watch here or, if you prefer, listen to it here. It featured the show’s writer and director Laura Wright, Dr Emma Whipday, Professor Lucy Munro, Creation’s Chief Executive Lucy Askew & actor Graeme Rose.

This show was supported by iSfB secured by OxLEP Business.
