Romeo & Juliet

12 - 23 May 2021

Live online | In parternship with Watford Palace Theatre

“Some consequence, yet hanging in the stars,
Shall bitterly begin.”

In May 2021 we travelled (virtually) to Verona to meet the world’s most famous star-crossed lovers, in an expansive digital universe. Audiences across the world experienced live online performance, filmed scenes and choose-your-own-adventure style gameplay. Immersive, fast-paced and interactive, this extraordinary adaptation put us all at the heart of the action.

Romeo & Juliet was thrilling and immersive; we all became one of the family. But even though we knew the ending, could we escape our fate?

“Creation Theatre’s Romeo and Juliet feels like a rollercoaster ride. Taking place across Zoom calls and breakout rooms, with elements of direct address and an emphasis on choosing your own adventure, it is a technologically ambitious and refreshing take on the well-known tale of warring families and young, doomed love.” ★★★★ The Stage

“The 13-strong cast make this piece come alive.” Broadway World

“In the captivating opening scene tarot cards are used cleverly to convey the sense of ‘star-crossed lovers’, and the famous balcony scene uses different angles to represent the lovers’ alternate perspectives. The Capulet’s Ball is engagingly presented in colour filters of purples and blues, with shimmering, silvery masks to suggest opulence before the tragedy. Directed by Natasha Rickman, and working in partnership with the Watford Palace Theatre, the standout performance was Annabelle Terry as Juliet, who offered an intelligent and emphatic interpretation of the role and whose measured delivery captured Juliet’s tragic dignity amongst the boisterousness around her.”  Ox in a Box

“Each audience member gets to choose not only which side they are on but also their pathway through the evolving game-show. This virtual story is told in such an inventive way that it is every bit as meaningful as an in-theatre version” Daily Info
