The Time Machine at the London Library

29 February – 5 April 2020

The London Library

An immersive re-imagining of the HG Wells iconic text, The Time Machine, saw us re-invent and piece back together a world in which the present is endlessly shifting and the future is strange and uncertain. Lead through the mahogany soaked surroundings of The London Library, our fellow travellers tinkered with timelines causing people’s names, faces and indeed the colour of their socks to change without warning.

Drawing on cutting edge research from the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities and incorporated into the script by writer Jonathan Holloway (Don Quixote, Brave New World and 1984), The Time Machine raised important questions about the future of neuroscience, big data, genomics and global connectedness.

The show was forced to close a week before the end of the run due to the first Covid-19 lockdown.

“There is lots of interest here.  The playfulness can be engaging as the show frolics around ideas about what time travel might do…” Stagedoor

“I would recommend The Time Machine at The London Library if you like immersive experiences in unusual locations…thought-provoking and engaging” ★★★★ Theatre Weekly

“A highly entertaining evening which raises some interesting questions about societal choices and benefits from perfect timing that means it hits incredibly close to home.” The Family Stage

“A special piece of theatre, not just for the Sci Fi nerds out there, but anyone that wishes to go on an adventure….the performance remains enticing and intriguing until the last beat.” ★★★★  Within Her Words

“A thought-provoking and bang-up-to-date production that is so zeitgeisty it feels like the zeitgeist itself.” ★★★★ NorthWestEnd

“An enjoyable and thought-provoking new take on a classic story with the added bonus of a unique historic space.” ★★★ British Theatre

“If you’ve ever dreamed of being a Dr Who companion, this may be the closest most of us will get.” ★★★★ Londonist

“We ventured onwards into reading rooms, archives, places where we could sit in comfy leather seats and beanbags. I really enjoyed it and time flew by in a flash” Number 9
