The Alchemist
11 - 29 October
The Maths Institute, Oxford & Conduit Street, London
Available to stream from 10th Nov
The sleek glass and chrome of The Mathematical Institute’s South Common Room became Lovewit’s penthouse for a two week sold-out run in the autumn of 2023. When his mistress leaves town fleeing the plague, Face (previously known as Jeremy!), Subtle and Doll began an elaborate series of hustles on their unsuspecting neighbours. But as the ‘marks’ arrived thick and fast at the apartment’s buzzer entry system the conmen’s carefully crafted scene rapidly descends in to near-chaos. This rarely-performed 400 year old story took on new life and had audiences howling with laughter from their extremely comfy sofa seats.
After selling out in Oxford, the show transferred to an art gallery in Mayfair for the weekend too.
“If you are keen to watch an engaging, mad-cap, farcical, bawdy, and captivating version of Jonson’s most successful play, then this is it! It doesn’t get any better.” Oxinabox
“Director Anna Tolputt clearly relishes the task of making this come alive for audiences with a fast-paced performing style which peppers the trimmed text with many modern interpolations and plenty of direct engagement with the audience.” Reviewshub
